The University of Georgia has named its 40 Under 40 Class of 2025, recognizing a group of young alumni based on their personal, professional and philanthropic achievements. Honorees from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences include Caroline Lewallen (BSA '11 - Agricultural Education), Charles Orgbon (BSA '18 - Environmental Economics and Management), Colby Ruiz (BSA '15 - Biological Science), Caroline Stelling (BSA '11 - Environmental Economics and Management) and Tyson Strickland (BSA '11, DVM '16 - Animal Science).
Andrew Vasina leads Biospringer by Lesaffre’s North America Culinary Center, a laboratory-kitchen hybrid where his team designs prototypes and learns how to use these natural ingredients in new ways. Here, they may tackle a specific product need for a client company or develop an entirely new product for the market. CAES News

University of Georgia food science alum Andrew Vasina leads Biospringer by Lesaffre’s North America Culinary Center, a laboratory-kitchen hybrid where his team designs prototypes and learns how to use these natural ingredients in new ways. Here, they may tackle a specific product need for a client company or develop an entirely new product for the market. Describing his role as part technical salesperson and part product developer, Vasina and his team partner with food manufacturers across North America to develop new products and taste profiles using one versatile product: yeast extract.

2025 Flavor of Georgia Winners 04/25/25 Jordan Powers
A baked good secured the top spot at the 2025 Flavor of Georgia food product competition, beating out a record 173 products submitted in 12 categories. Sunday Dinner Gritscuits, produced by Lady Belle, are French gougeres, or cheese puffs, stuffed with macaroni and cheese flavored grits with collard greens and smoked turkey. Lady Belle is a French-Southern fusion microbakery specializing in handcrafted Parisian style macarons, Belle (Signature) Macarons and savory Gritscuits.
The 2025 inductees to the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame are David Bridges, a former assistant dean for CAES at UGA’s Tifton campus, and Ralph Evans, a business and peanut industry leader whose family has been serving the agricultural community since 1922. CAES News

A visionary leader in agricultural education and research and a stalwart agricultural industry supporter and business leader were inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame on March 21 at the 69th University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association Awards and Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame Ceremony. The 2025 honorees are David Bridges, a former assistant dean for CAES at UGA’s Tifton campus, and Ralph Evans, a leader of industry whose family has been serving the agricultural community since 1922.

Andres Villegas knows a thing or two about trees, and he wants you to know them as well. Throughout his career in the agriculture and forestry industry, Villegas has become an advocate and bridge builder connecting rural and urban communities through sustainable food and fiber products. Villegas was born in Colombia but moved to Athens at 8 months old when his parents, Pedro Villegas and Angela Villegas, returned to the University of Georgia for his father to become a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine. From a young age, Villegas was interested in natural resources and agriculture.

2025 Alumni Association Awards 02/06/25 Jordan Powers
Five alumni from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be honored next month at the 69th annual CAES Alumni Association Awards banquet on March 21 at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. The annual ceremony honors college alumni for their outstanding achievements. The event also includes recognition of new inductees into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame. “Agriculture and agribusinesses are vital to many of our communities and vital to each of us in our daily lives,” said Carlton Self, CAES Alumni Association board president.

A Doctor's Journey 01/23/25 Aaron Hale
Dr. Colby Ruiz was a teenager when he watched his first surgery. He volunteered in the operating room at Valdosta’s South Georgia Medical Center, where his parents worked as nurses. Ruiz could have ended up in any of the hospital units except, at 14, he really didn’t want to wear the pink “candy striper” uniform of most hospital volunteers. When Ruiz learned that OR volunteers wore green, he was all in.

The University of Georgia Alumni Association released the 2025 Bulldog 100, a list of the 100 fastest-growing businesses owned or led by UGA graduates. The program, organized by the Division of Development & Alumni Relations, celebrates 15 years of honoring alumni and their entrepreneurial endeavors. Among this year’s class, businesses are headquartered in a total of eight states, with 87 of the businesses located in Georgia. In total, 142 alumni representing over two dozen industries are being recognized as a part of this year’s list.
In Georgia alone, there are nearly 400,000 individuals employed in some segment of hospitality. With the unique mix of leisure travel in coastal Georgia and convention travel in Atlanta, HFIM students have a wealth of opportunities to choose the area that suits them best. CAES News
