A summer drought combined with scorching temperatures have Georgia farmers feeling the heat, says University of Georgia’s agricultural climatologist Pam Knox.

Mycotoxins are harmful chemicals that are produced by fungi in crops like peanuts and corn. A group of agricultural scientists from across the world met in Georgia last month to discuss the need for more robust sampling and detection methods for these potentially lethal food toxins.

Potential record-setting corn yields have contributed to a bleak market for Georgia farmers, says University of Georgia agricultural economist, Nathan Smith. Smith also believes next year’s price will be worse than this year’s.

Georgia Representative Terry England was presented the Georgia 4-H Green Jacket Award last month for his support of the youth development program.
At Rock Eagle 4-H Center, students learn about pioneer life at the Scott Site. They pump water from a well, wash clothes on a washboard and gain an appreciation for modern-day life. This year, they planted a vegetable garden and provided produce for the center's dining hall. CAES News

An international team of scientists including researchers from the University of Georgia recently published the genome of Brassica napus—commonly known as canola—in the journal Science. Their discovery paves the way for improved versions of the plant, which is used widely in farming and industry.

University of Georgia cotton and peanut research will be on display at an annual field day in Tifton next month.
World Cup rider Melanie Smith Taylor is one of only two riders to ever win the “Triple Crown of Show Jumping.” She is the only rider to win the American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby and the American Gold Cup on the same horse, Calypso who is shown with her in the photo. CAES News

TaylorMade Horsemanship Clinic has been set for Sept. 6-7 at the University of Georgia’s Livestock Instructional Arena in Athens. The clinic will tentatively be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Preregistration is required.

Herb Bennett and Ben Copeland, two pioneers in Georgia agriculture, will be inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame during a ceremony set for Sept. 19 at the Classic Center in Athens. The hall of fame is a program of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
